New Expanda Distribution Depot

On April 1st 2006, the new dedicated Expanda distribution depot opened for business.

Based in Lingfield, Surrey the depot is close to the M23/25 motorway network ensuring that customers receive their orders quickly and efficiently throughout the U.K.

Andy Hall, Operations Director at Extraspace describes the new depot as “an excellent move from our previous depot in Croydon”. He continues “logistically and commercially it is absolutely the right decision for Extraspace in order to continue our rapid growth in the flatpack building sector. Customers will also be able to come and view demonstration buildings in pleasant surroundings – something Croydon could not offer”.

Making Space

The Oakhill Education Trust had a problem... one of their schools needed to provide additional classroom accommodation quickly and cost effectively. Not only that, the only piece of land available at the Surrey Hills School was inaccessible to all but those on foot!

Enter the clever team at Extraspace... the only portable building manufacturer who provides man-portable, flatpack, modular buildings for just this purpose.

The product that fitted the bill was of course, the Expandakabin. The building was delivered in flatpack 'kit' form, and armed with nothing more than some former pupils and a supervisor provided by Extraspace, the building structure was up in six hours!

Very pleased with the results, the school has now asked Extraspace to provide a technology workshop / classroom using the same system.

Expanda flatpack buildings continue to increase their market share in the portable building market, due to their low price tag, fast availability and simple DIY assembly.

Sky's the limit!

Getting accommodation to inaccessible locations is nothing new to the team at Extraspace.

And just to prove it, one of their recent projects involved flying flat packed buildings to a remote location on the Isle of Skye to provide accommodation for a film crew.

The 'Expanda' range is a revelation in the portable building world.

This low cost DIY portable building system is now being used around the World for a host of applications.

Closer to home however, the more likely use is for home / site offices, workshops, playrooms and stores.

Consisting of two products: Expanda-Store and Expanda-Kabin: both products are fully modular and can be extended by adding further modules at any time after initial assembly. They can be transported whilst assembled (with a cargo on board) or flatpacked and stored away whilst not in use.

Try doing all of that with a conventional portable building!

Modular Installation of Office space

With those early morning "doubt demons" beginning to nag at the back of my mind with questions like - 'what has been forgotten' or 'what has been over looked', I set of for Bishops Stortford on a clear and warm day - always a good omen. We were installing the Regional Offices for "Wilson Bowden" onto the roof of the Jackson Square shopping Centre.

On arrival you see the 300 ton crane has arrived, the first modules are parked up in a nearby lay-by and the crew have made it down from the factory intact and your fears start to dispel.

In glorious weather the installation of an eight bay high specification office was lifted with great care and skill onto the steel foundation plates specially made for the job. By mid afternoon the team had dispersed and it was like we had never been around but hidden high in the roof tops was another Extraspace building

Traveling home is always easier!

This project was completed in four weeks from order to installation.

New offices for Siemens

Siemens have taken delivery of their new project offices at Littlebrook Power Station, Dartford.

The fully air conditioned complex was constructed with three specially manufactured JackCAB units with extra wide links in order to give an open plan layout.

'Stenni' was used on the external face of the building, this aggregate cladding eliminates the need to repaint the structure, increases the overall life of the cabins, and gives a please aesthetic appearance.

As well as delivery and installation of the complex, Extraspace sourced and organised all the furniture required as a courtesy service.

On the move

As from September this year, we will be relocating to a new head office location, we have already designed the new site and have begun the moving process by setting up our depot and a small office at the new location. Our new headquarters will give our company and our clients many benefits, namely:

  • Improved communications (as all key staff will be on site)
  • Larger stock holding facilities (enabling faster delivery times)
  • Product display area (enabling clients to visit and see our product range in person)
  • Extra space (allowing us to take on further staff, to assist the smooth running on our company)

We will keep you updated of our move over the coming months.

New marketing suite

New Marketing Suite for Goldcrest Homes in Wimbledon.

Extraspace's 'Projects Division' has completed a ' "bespoke" Marketing Suite for Goldcrest Homes at their exciting new property development in Wimbledon.

Their brief was to create an innovative structure, using the shell and fittings from an existing building. The finished solution offers a very tastefully designed and enjoyable work space.

The buildings' attractive environment has had the desired effect, with Goldcrest Homes reporting a 50% reservation take up in their first weekend, which has surpassed their expectations.

The building features an internal water feature, full CCTV coverage and air conditioning - everything that you would expect to find in a high class sales centre.

Extraspace's next project of this nature is for Taylor Woodrow.

Extraspace had 26 staff working inside the 10m x 4m double storey building, which prompted Rex Whittaker, a Director of Goldcrest Homes, to pass on his thanks for Extraspace's 'sterling' efforts during the 6 week construction period.

Our First Bungalow for London (Lewisham)

We have finished work on the manufacture of a bungalow (as well as the foundations, construction, landscaping, fencing and pathway) - the first we have been contracted for in London.

Our new building replaces an existing prefabricated dwelling, originally put up just after the war in the 1940's, and recently damaged by fire.

As you can imagine, there have been many developments in modular building design and technology since the original was installed, and our brief was to keep as near as possible to the original buildings appearance as possible, but to adhere to all the new Building Regulations especially with regard to insulation properties etc.

The new building is now located within an existing estate of 1940's prefabs, and is the first of several more, as the old buildings get updated.

Our Manufacturing Facility in London.

We are putting the finishing touches to our new factory which is situated at our existing depot in London. It has been specially built to serve the needs of our clients in the south of England and Europe.

Not only will we be the only London based manufacturing facility for portable buildings, it will also ensure that our customers will pay less for transport. Our associate company 'Rais-A-Cabin' who occupy part of the site are on hand to deliver buildings at short notice, and also take care of the clients cranage requirements.

We can also store our client's buildings for them. We have a large open storage site at our depot, together with a 9 tonne 4.2 litre forklift that can stack and move large cabins. We have 24 hour security on site, ensuring that stock is safe.

The existing factory in North Yorkshire will continue to produce modular buildings and specialist structures as before, together with an additional facility, to construct and distribute imported kit buildings.

The Sales Director (Andy Hall) describes the new set up as a real threat to our competitors. "Nobody else is our business has the ability to manufacture in London. Our clients will now benefit from reduced prices and a shorter delivery time. Before this development, the entire industry was based in the North of England simply because it always has been - and for no other good reason."

The Project Manager (Martyn Taylor) who is overseeing the development is looking forward to completing the factory in April. Martyn has many years experience in the industry and has been with Extraspace for 5 months now. In that time he has installed many projects for us whilst setting up the new factory, offices and stores.

Are you looking for something 'different?'

Forget the illusion that many of us have. When it comes to Portable Buildings many of us think of a box with windows.

Well no more folks, Extraspace have been re-thinking and re-working the entire concept over recent years, and have re-structured their design, technical and manufacturing capabilities to bring us in line with the 21st century - something that other manufacturers and not keen do to. Limitations on designs are very rare to see these days, from storage sheds to aircraft hangers, defeat has not arrived at our door, so far!!.

One of our most recent projects was for a Summer house and workshop in the back garden of a residential property in Sudbury.

Our client wanted a "different" look, so, to the drawing board we went. The end result was most certainly different, a sexy slimline look with a touch of sophistication. the entire structure was delivered in flatpack form, and included wood grain effect uPVC double glazed windows, recessed eyeball spotlights, sliding patio doors and 'Easy Clean' wall lining throughout. Taking three days to deliver and install, we kept disruption on our clients property to an absolute minimum.

Perhaps we could assist with your next special project? We would be very happy to discuss it with you.

New Animal Reception Centre - Heathrow

The Corporation of London came to Extraspace when the Animal Reception Centre at Heathrow had ran out of space.

Recently finished, the project - which was both intriguing and educational for all involved was for the supply of a Portal Framed Building of some 60ft in length.

The building is now being used as a Fish Imports unit for housing all shapes, colours and size fish being brought into England from all over the world.

The new unit which stands proudly along side the existing facility, which houses many breeds of animals ranging from spiders to snakes. Extraspace carried out the entire project; foundations, framework, cladding including CDM & Project management by our in-house team and our Project Manager - Stephen Lambert.

New High-tech Offices For St. James Homes

Recently delivered to St. James Homes for their sales & marketing suite in Central London, Extraspace provided this high-tech glass fronted modular building.

Complete with recessed lighting, marble and granite flooring, internal staircase and plasma video screens, this was probably one of our most ambitious projects to date.

Sean Halvey of St. James Homes wrote "It was indeed pleasing to see members of your organisation working alongside other trades to produce a product which, we as a company , are very proud of".
